Founded in 1911 on the site of the former Qing royal gardens (Tsinghua Garden) in Beijing, Tsinghua University was initially established as a preparatory school funded by the Boxer Indemnity Scholarship Program, following the 1909 U.S. indemnity reduction. It became Tsinghua School in 1911, transitioned into a full national university by 1928, and continued its operations through wartime relocations before returning to Beijing after 1946. Following the national education reforms of 1952, Tsinghua was designated a National Key University.
